Azpilicueta Insists Chelsea have put themselves in a tough position

After conceding a 97th-minute equalizer, the Blues squandered a wonderful opportunity to strengthen their Champions League prospects.

Chelsea

captain

Cesar Azpilicueta

acknowledges that letting a two-goal lead slip to draw with Wolves on Saturday was a mistake. Despite VAR ruling Ruben Loftus-Cheek's goal, the Blues were comfortably ahead going into the last 15 minutes thanks to a double from

Romelu Lukaku

.

Wolves rallied back late to tie the game at 2-2 in the 97th minute, denying them a win that would have effectively qualified them for the Champions League. "We were leading 2-0, so to lose two points in this manner is incredibly upsetting," Azpilicueta told

Sky Sports

.

"Of sure, the game has a poor flavor. We have been surrendering far too many goals in recent games, putting us in a precarious situation in the

Champions League

battle.

"Other teams are winning, but we aren't scoring as well as we should be." We must band together and make the most of the remaining weeks. It is in our control, and we must play in the

FA Cup final

." While the top four seemed a definite conclusion for Chelsea only a few weeks ago, two defeats and two draws in their previous five Premier League appearances have allowed Arsenal and Spurs to reduce the gap.

Arsenal's win over Leeds on Sunday would move them within a point of Chelsea in third place, while Tottenham may close the gap to three points if they beat Liverpool.

"The pressure is constant. It is something you must accept. Every detail is crucial. Now we need to get off to a better start," Azpilicueta remarked. "We used to be a strong squad, but now we give up a lot of goals." As a result, we've found ourselves in a terrible situation.

"We need to improve our fundamentals." We've given up a lot of goals in the last several games. The key areas are the two boxes. At home, we scored two goals and then conceded two. That is difficult.

"A 1-0 victory is sometimes required. We haven't been as sharp or fluid as we have been in the past, but we scored to make it 2-0, which should have been enough."
