Chelsea takeover: Hamilton confirms he's joined Broughton consortium

Sir Lewis Hamilton, the Formula One champion, has revealed why he has joined Sir Martin Broughton's quest to buy Chelsea.

On Thursday, it was disclosed that

Lewis Hamilton

and tennis legend Serena Williams had each pledged at least £10 million to aid Broughton in his last offer for the

Chelsea

, with Broughton directly fighting against Stephen Pagliuca and

Todd Boehly

.

Hamilton spoke about his involvement in the group ahead of the

Emilia Romagna Grand Prix

this weekend, stating his intention to assist with the purchase of Chelsea and exposing his ties to the Blues despite supporting London rivals

Arsenal

.

When asked if he is interested in becoming a part-owner of Chelsea, Hamilton said, "I do, very much so, yeah. I've loved football since I was a youngster, and I played it from the age of four until I was seventeen. Throughout my childhood, I was in teams every year, and I was a member of the school team every year.

"I've seen a lot of games. I used to play football with all the kids and a couple of close pals when I was younger, just across the block from where I lived. I was the only kid of color there, and I really wanted to fit in.  know the kids all supported different clubs - one was Tottenham, the other was

Manchester United

- and I remember bouncing between these teams when I was younger and my sister slapping me in the arm multiple times, effectively telling me I had to support Arsenal."

I remember becoming an Arsenal fan when I was around five or six years old, but my uncle Terry is a great Blues fan, and I've gone to a lot of games with him to watch Arsenal and Chelsea play.

"In the end, I'm a sports fan. Football is the most popular sport in the world, and Chelsea is one of the most prestigious and successful clubs in the world. When I first heard about this possibility, I said to myself, "Wow, this is one of the best chances to be a part of something." It's very fantastic."
