Everton sacked Rafael Benitez after their dismal 2-1 defeat to Norwich

After their tenth defeat of the season, the Toffees have opted to make a change at the helm of the bench.

Everton's head manager Rafael Benitez has been dismissed following their 2-1 setback to Norwich City on Saturday.

Despite having formerly coached Everton's arch-rivals Liverpool between 2004 and 2010, Benitez was brought in to succeed

Carlo Ancelotti

in the Goodison Park scorching seat in June.

The Toffees started the 2021-22 season well under the 61-year-old but swiftly fell out of favor due to injuries and positive Covid-19 tests, with a 2-1 loss to relegation-threatened Norwich proving to be the final straw for an impatient boardroom.

The club have released a statement regarding

Benitez's exit

, which reads:

"Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as first-team manager.

"Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the club with immediate effect.

"An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course."

Everton climbed to fifth place in the

Premier League

after collecting 13 points in their first six fixtures under Benitez but then went on an eight-match winless streak that included gloomy defeats at home to Watford and Liverpool.

Benitez was given a short relief with a 2-1 home victory against Arsenal and a 1-1 stalemate with Chelsea at the start of December, but the Toffees ended up losing to Crystal Palace and Brighton before hitting a new low against Norwich this weekend.

Everton supporters rarely warmed up to the Spaniard, and he exits with a Premier League tally of seven wins, 11 draws, and four losses, as well as a surprising Carabao Cup third-round defeat to QPR.
