Richard Arnold to take over Woodward’s role

The Red Devils are planning to promote Richard Arnold to the chief executive as Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, is departing the club; however, he intends to take a different approach in some parts.

Ed Woodward

, who has been the executive vice-chairman since David Gill left in 2013, pronounced that he will leave his role by the end of 2021 due to the scandal of the European Super League in April.

Now that 2021 ended, there has been no formal announcement, but

Richard Arnold

is set to take up that role and be promoted from the group managing director.

Woodward, who was praised for his business acumen, not his sporting operations management, has been raising many controversies throughout his time in charge at

Manchester United

.

The reason behind his unpopularity with fans is due to the ‘urgent transfer business’ that resulted in him leaving the 2013 pre-season tour of Australia prematurely. Some supporters were so angry they even attacked his house in January 2020 and April 2021.

It has been eight months since he announced that he is stepping down. In November, speculations were going around saying that he may remain at Old Trafford and take the advisory role and assist the search for a new manager.

According to

The Athletic

, Woodward’s departure is on the verge of happening, with his former Pricewaterhouse Coopers colleague ‘ready to take over’.

The first thing that is going to change is the title of the job as Arnold will be the ‘chief executive’. He also intends to get less involved in football-related matters and give more autonomy to football director John Murtough for dictating sporting operations. However, unlike Woodward, he is going to have a permanent base at Manchester United.
