Jorge Jesus parts way with Benfica after defeat by Porto

Benfica’s loss at the hands of Porto was the last game Jorge Jesus managed as the tactician is on the verge of departing the club by mutual consent.

Benfica

have parted ways with their manager

Jorge Jesus

by mutual consent and the decision was made after their 3-0 loss against

Porto

in the round of 16 in the Taca de Portugal, with a clash against the same rivals in the league on Thursday coming up.

The 67-year-old went back to Benfica in 2020 but during his first season, he only managed to help them finish third, not winning any silverware for the first time since the 2012-13 campaign.

The squad did not pull off an impressive performance in Europe as they were eliminated in the qualifying stage of the

Champions League

and then crashed out of Europa League in the Round of 32.

As Jesus is leaving, Benfica are once again sitting third after 15 matches this season, winning 12, drawing one and being defeated twice. They are four points adrift of Porto on top of the table.

Nelson Verissimo has taken over as caretaker manager until the season ends, having done this before following the departure of Bruno Lage in 2020.
