Tuchel uncertain of Saul’s future after Watford disappointment

The Blues boss admitted that he is not sure about on-loan midfielder Saul Niguez’ future, who suffered another poor display in their 2-1 victory over Watford on Wednesday.

Saul Niguez

was having his second start in the

Premier League

in

Jorginho

N’Golo Kane

and

Mateo Kovacic

’s absence, but like the first game – the 3-0 victory over

Aston Villa

– he failed to impress in an underwhelming 45 minutes.

Trevoh Chalobah replaced him in the midfield, a place where he featured in during loans with Ipswich, Huddersfield and Lorient.

Saul has not convinced the

Chelsea

boss yet and after the match, Tuchel revealed that he does not know about the midfielder’s future yet.

"

I don't know where he goes from this performance but he was on a yellow card so we had two options - take Marcos [Alonso] off who also had a yellow card and try Saul as a wing-back,"

Tuchel said (via football.london).

"I had this in my mind before the game, if something happened to Marcos. I thought maybe it was not the right match to try things with new positions so it was him to change the shape a little bit and have Thiago [Silva] on the pitch with his organising.

"Having Trevoh on the six who is more physical - unfortunately Trevoh injured himself and we ended up with Ruben on the single six. It was a tactical decision."

Chelsea acquired his services on a deal worth £3m from Atletico Madrid on loan this season but they did not include an obligation to sign the player but they agreed to have an option to buy for £30m next summer.

He featured in seven games this season and has only managed more than 45 minutes twice.

Jorginho is likely to be available for the battle against West Ham on Saturday, having sat on the bench against Watford. However, Kante and Kovacic are sidelined due to injuries.
