Hummels criticizes Dahoud for 'stupid' red card against Gladbach

Dahoud was sent off just before the second half, making it harder for his team to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat.

Denis Zakaria’s goal in the 37th minute was enough for Borussia Monchengladbach to defeat Dortmund on home soil. Playing without the services of Erling Haaland and Marco Reus, Dortmund did not display good form even before conceding the opener. However, Marco Rose’s side were given another blow when they went down to ten men minutes before the half-time whistle.

Mahmoud Dahoud

was shown a yellow card in the tenth minute, but that was not enough to keep him from lunging more tackles during the first half. The 25-year-old was given another yellow card three minutes after Zakaria’s opener, which was followed by a red card for his behavior after receiving the second booking.

In a post-match interview, Dortmund defender

Mats Hummels

spoke about the referee’s decision.

“I think Mo knows he screwed up big time there,”

the Dortmund star told

Sky Germany

.

“I hope it never happens again. There is no excuse for it.

“It's stupid to give the referee the chance to make a wrong decision, and that’s what happened here. To send him off for it is wrong in my opinion, but you already have a yellow and then you can’t give the referee the chance to send you off.”

Dahoud issued an apology message on his Instagram

account

after the game, vowing to display a different performance in his side’s Champions League match against Sporting CP on Tuesday.

"Disappointed with today's outcome of the game and especially with my dismissal

," he wrote.

"Outnumbered it was difficult for us to come back again. Sorry to the team and the fans! Respectful interaction on and off the pitch is important to me. Now we have to look ahead. We want to show the right reaction on Tuesday."

Dortmund slipped to fourth place on the Bundesliga table after their defeat against Gladbach. Following their match against Sporting, the Black and Yellows will continue their league campaign with a battle against Augsburg on Saturday.
