Benitez defends ‘injured’ Calvert-Lewin after draw against Leeds

The thrilling Premier League contest between Everton and Leeds United ended all square as Benitez admits that despite scoring the match’s opener, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is not 100% fit and has been unable to train properly.

Everton took the lead

as Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the penalty that was awarded by VAR, where they adjudged that the English forward was fouled by Liam Cooper. The goal made it two from two for Calvert-Lewin but he missed several chances in the second half.

Benitez

 told his

post-match conference

when was questioned about the 24-year-old’s performance against Leeds:

"No, I was happy because he was there and he had the chances.

"It [the conversation] was more about his fitness. He has had some problems training. Little by little he is improving. He knows he needs to improve his fitness and it will be a question of time."

Benitez

added:

"He's had a problem with his toe. He has not been doing full training sessions in the last 10 days. That is the reason why. You can see the quality he has but he is missing a little bit of the stamina to finish the games in the way he wants to finish them.

"I am really pleased because of that. He wants to train and he wants to play, but he couldn't train normally. I am pleased to see him making an effort, his partnership with Richarlison is very good. He is making an effort and showing his commitment."

Everton

will next face Huddersfield

in the EFL Cup on Tuesday before

a Premier League clash at Brighton

 on Saturday.
