Ferdinand urges Varane to adapt quickly to the English game

The French center-back is on the verge of completing a move to Old Trafford.

Raphael Varane

is set to

join Manchester United on a £41 million deal

. The experienced defender, who has spent the last 10 years at Real Madrid, is expected to undergo a medical in England and finalize the deal in the coming days.

Rio Ferdinand

believes the Red Devils have secured a suitable signing, but urges the 28-year-old about adapting to the Premier League.

The former Manchester United defender told

FIVE Youtube channel

:

"On paper it looks a very, very good combination, but he’s got to understand the English game is very different. You’ve got to go to Burnley and places like that.

"Sometimes it can be up and at ’em, a different style of football in the Premier League to anything he’s played in before.

"Can he deal with it? They’re the questions he’s going to get asked.

"Balls getting wrapped around his ear holes, crosses from different angles that he hasn’t seen on a consistent basis in Spain where they play more on the floor, slower football, slower build up.

"So he’s going to be asked to defend in a different way and that’s where he’s going to have to show his real class, can he adapt? That's the real question.

"I genuinely believe he’s got the tools to do that."

Varane is set to join Harry Maguire at the heart of the Red Devils’ defense. The 28-year-old is expected to be available for United’s friendly match against

Everton

on August 7. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will start their 2021-22 campaign with a game against Leeds United on August 14.
