‘Where was Shaw?’ Mourinho doesn’t blame Saka for penalty miss

The Portuguese coach criticizes England’s experienced players for not stepping forward in the penalty shoot-outs against Italy.

England

were defeated by

Italy

in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday. Following a tense 1-1 draw, the Three Lions saw their trophy dreams go up in smoke in front of their fans as they lost 3-2 on penalties. After two missed penalties from Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, it all came down to

Bukayo Saka

’s decisive penalty to equalize the game. The 19-year-old tried to place the ball in the bottom right corner, but his shot was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Jose Mourinho

says the young star should not be blamed as England’s senior players have failed to take responsibility in the penalty shoot-outs.

He told

talkSPORT

:

"For Saka to have the destiny of a country on his shoulders, I think it is too much for a kid to have everything on his shoulders in this moment.

"But I do not know if I have to ask that question to Gareth [Southgate] or not. Because many times what happens is that players who should be there, they are not there. Players who should be there, they run away from responsibility.

"Gareth is such an honest guy and a protective coach that I do not believe he would ever say player A or player B ran away or told me they were not ready to [take a penalty].

"I do not know in this case, but I do not think it matters if you are a great penalty taker or not. In this situation, where was [Raheem] Sterling? Where was [John] Stones and where was Luke Shaw?

"And why [Jordan] Henderson or [Kyle] Walker did not stay on the pitch? In reality, it is very hard for Rashford and Sancho to come and take a penalty after one touch of the ball."

England missed their chance to win their first major trophy in 55 years, but their horrible night was not over after the game. Following their penalty misses, Rashford, Saka, and Sancho were subjected to racist abuse on social media. With their well-equipped squad, England are certainly among the favorites to win the next year’s World Cup in Qatar. However, they seem to be far away from solving the issue of racism in their football.
