Everton set to appoint Rafael Benitez as their new manager

Rafael Benitez is expected to be announced as Everton’s new manager today.

The former

Liverpool

manager has been chosen as successor to

Carlo Ancelotti

, who returned to

Real Madrid

on June 1, after he agreed to sign a three-year-deal at Goodison Park.

The official announcement is all that remains to seal an appointment that has received a mixed reaction from Everton supporters.

Several banners were hung up outside Goodison Park protesting at

Everton

's move for Benitez, while Police are investigating a banner near Benitez’s Merseyside home reading "We Know Where You Live - Don't Sign".

Benitez

was in charge at Anfield for six years and led the club to the Champions League and FA Cup glory.

He had short spells in different clubs including

Inter Milan

Chelsea

,

Napoli

,

Real Madrid

,

Newcastle

, and most recently Chinese Super League side

Dalian Professional

.

Former

Wolverhampton

boss

Nuno Espirito

Santo was in Everton’s radar but Benitez became the favorite for the role after holding several rounds of talks with the club board.

Everton will host

Southampton

in their first game of 2021-22 campaign, with the Premier League set to start on August 14-15.
