I hope Van Dijk can make Netherlands squad for Euro 2020 - De Boer

The Netherlands national team coach recognizes that the defender is facing a ‘dilemma’, but is hopeful that he will return to action for the tournament.

According to

Frank de Boer

,

Virgil van Dijk

will be the one to make a decision on whether to feature in Euro 2020, and the Dutch head coach is optimistic that the Reds defender will be fit to make it to the squad.

The Netherlands international’s 2020-21 season was cut short due to the knee injury he sustained after Jordan Pickford’s tackle in a draw with Everton on October 17.

The 29-year-old underwent surgery and started a rehabilitation program. Notwithstanding an uncertain time for him to return to action, De Boer is hopeful that he comes back for the European Championship.

I think he has to decide, it is his career,”

the Netherlands boss told

ESPN

.

"I can imagine that he is in a dilemma. Can It mean something for Oranje? I hope he has made giant steps in his rehabilitation.”

Liverpool

boss

Jurgen Klopp

stated that he wants the defender to join the squad for the Euros, but is doubtful as Van Dijk will be given little time to get fit for a match.

"

Virgil's knee. I don't want to hold him back, but you cannot force it as well,"

The Reds boss said earlier this month.

"If you want to play in a tournament, you have to train beforehand, proper football training - and not a week before but weeks before.

"You can't after 10 or 11 months out train for a week and then play football, that is just not possible. It should not be possible.

"Nobody is holding him back, I can promise all the people in Holland that. But you can't force it, and we will not."

Although Van Dijk may be pleased to be given the chance to go into the pitch sooner, Liverpool are not going to risk it.

He has been training on his own but his return has not been cleared yet. The Netherlands manager has many options available and he may have to choose from them rather than calling up Van Dijk.
