Liverpool to close deal for Ben Davies before deadline

Liverpool are expected to sign Preston defender Ben Davies before the end of the January transfer window.

with a £2-million deal to strengthen their backline before the current transfer window closes.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had been eager to sign a defender ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline, with

Virgil van Dijk

,

Joe Gomez

,

Joel Matip

, and

Fabinho

all out injured. Davies, 25, was out of contract at the end of the season and had been close to joining Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

The deal sees Liverpool’s defender

Sepp van den Berg

head to Preston on loan.

Asked about his side's interest in the defender after Liverpool's 3-1 win at West Ham on Sunday, Klopp told Sky Sports: "

Ben Davies, Tottenham... I have nothing to say about it. With this line-up it's not a problem, it's only if something else happen

s."

Davies has made more than 140 league appearances at Preston and has enjoyed a host of loan spells with the likes of York, Tranmere, Southport, Newport County, and Fleetwood.
