"Because I wasn't permitted to practice with the squad, I exercised alone in the gym and on a field to maintain my physical condition."

Sporting rewarded Silva's contributions by bringing him back to the stadium in 2018 for a special homage to a player who joined them at the age of 12 after moving 400 kilometers away from his home to a nation where he was still learning the language after growing up in France.

"All those years came flooding back to me, so it was really emotional," Silva admits, crying on the field. "Sports not only developed me as a player but also as a man, and they will always have a particular place in my heart."

Leicester's midfielder's career was virtually ended before it ever started. In an exclusive interview with GOAL, Silva says, "The new manager didn't like the player I was, and that's simply a reality."

"When I finally had an opportunity to play, I showed that I could be a valuable asset to the club, but the manager was the only one who disagreed.

"However, in football, there are occasions when the coach does not believe in you, or you are injured — a variety of issues may lead to these tough situations."

"I'd love to see Leicester win their first European title for a variety of reasons," he says. "First and foremost, since there are still certain players with whom I am still friendly.

"Second, for Aiyawatt, the current owner of the club, for honoring his promise and carrying on his father's wonderful work (Vichai).”

"It's also fantastic because Leicester's supporters and residents deserve to win. I thought the supporters were really supportive of me while I played, particularly in the first game.”

Silva's choice was ultimately validated, as he went on to establish himself as a first-team regular at Sporting, finally earning a spot in the Portugal squad.

Leicester came calling in 2017 since he had been a European champion the year before, and he had also played a key role in the Seleccao's victory in France.

Remember, before the Euros, Portugal had never won a major title, and there were so many strong contenders: France, Italy, Spain, and Germany.”
