His father was a civil engineer and owner of a construction and consultant business and his mother was a Labor Department worker. The family moved to Halmstad when Freddie was 5, a move that apparently didn’t sit well with Freddie.

The young Fredrik, who had become an older brother in 1984 when his brother Karl Oskar Filip was born was now enrolled at the local football club, Halmstads BK, so naturally much of

Freddie Ljungberg childhood

was spent playing football as well as various other sports like ice-hockey and handball. Despite his small stature he showed great promise in all sports and even got called up to U15 national handball team but his love of football made him focus solely on it rather than any other sport.

He later credited his coach Olle Eriksson and the legendary Brazilian midfielder, Socrates, as his inspirations to pursue football. Eriksson who himself was once a footballer saw Freddie’s true potential and encouraged him throughout his early career.

Football Career

Now let’s take a look at Freddie Ljungberg’s club career as well as his time with the Swedish national team:

Halmstad

Having joined

Halmstads BK

as a preteen, Ljungberg had ended up playing with boys his senior for the majority of his academy years. he was finally able to make his senior debut for the club in 1994 against AIK but it wasn’t until 1995 that he would become a regular for Halmstads. Ljungberg’s breakout season in 1995 coincided with the club winning the Swedish cup but his biggest achievement was yet to come.

After establishing himself further in the starting eleven in 1996, the 1997 saw Ljungberg’s best performances in the Halmstads’ shirt as they were able to win the league, a feat they have only repeated once since then. The young Freddie Ljungberg was starting to get noticed by Europe’s top clubs and soon there was a bidding war between the likes of Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea to attract the Swedish youngster in the January of 2018.

Arsenal

After scouting him for a year and following Sweden’s victory over England, in which Ljungberg had a hand in, Arsene Wenger gave the go for Arsenal to sign Freddie Ljungberg for £3 million in 1998. Ljungberg was partially brought in as a back up to the brilliant Marc Overmars but he proved his worth after scoring on his debut in a 3-0 victory over Manchester United. Substitute appearances and occasional starts followed in his first season but Ljungberg became fully integrated in the first team in his 2nd season where he started racking up 40+ appearances a season.

With him losing out on the 2000 UEFA Cup final due to injury, Ljungberg was adamant to make an impact in his 2nd cup final with Arsenal when they reached the 2001 FA Cup final but despite him scoring Arsenal’s only goal the Gunners were robbed of victory as Liverpool came back to win 2-1. However, Ljungberg was not fazed by this and went on to have the best season of his career in the following 2001-02 season.

With Ljungberg scoring a career-best 17 goals in the 2001-02 season Arsenal was able to win their 2nd double under Arsene Wenger. Ljungberg once again in the FA Cup final, this time against Chelsea, and was additionally named as the Best Player of the Season with his goals against Manchester United, Liverpool and many more proving instrumental in Gunners’ Double. He brought his fine form to the following season where Arsenal despite a late upset in the league went on to win the FA Cup once more, with Ljungberg scoring the winning goal in the semi-final.

The 2003-04 season was a historical one as Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal was able to go an entire Premier League season without losing a single match. Ljungberg made 30 appearances that season and became one of the pillars of the Arsenal Invincibles. The following 2004-05 season saw Ljungberg’s 2nd best season in terms of his goal scoring (14) and he was able to win yet another FA Cup.

Although Ljungberg was one of

Arsenal’s most important players

in the early 2000s, the Swede was always plagued by injuries, some of which were recurring. Nonetheless, he helped Arsenal reach the Champions League final in 2006 but heartbreak was to follow as the 10-men Gunners lost to Barcelona after some questionable refereeing decisions. He decided to leave Arsenal a season later after a bad run of injuries.

West Ham United

After spending 9 very successful seasons with the

Gunners

, Freddie Ljungberg decided to join another London-based club, West Ham United. He joined the Hammers on 23 July, 2007 and was immediately given the captain’s armband. However, his time with West Ham didn’t turn out to be as glorious as his time at Arsenal, partially due to his history of injuries that had plagued his later years at Arsenal and partially due to his age (30).

It took Ljungberg 7 months until he scored his first goal for West Ham. he then went on to score another a month later but that would be his final goal for the Hammers as there were speculations about

West Ham

offering Ljungberg money to cancel his 4-year contract. Despite denying the rumors at first, Ljungberg eventually cancelled his contract with West Ham for the price of £6 million stating that it was beneficial to both parties.

Seattle Sounders

Following his departure from West Ham United, there were heavy speculations linking Ljungberg to multiple top teams in Serie A and France’s Ligue 1. But by the end of the summer transfer window of 2008, Ljungberg was still a free agent training with his old team, Halmstads BK. However, during several trips to United States, Freddie’s agent convinced him to meet with Seattle Sounders majority shareholder, Joe Roth. After which he was finally signed on as a designated player for the

Seattle Sounders

for the upcoming 2009 season.

Despite early skepticism from many pundits and fans about Ljungberg’s high-profile move to the MLS, which saw the Swede earn 10 million dollars over the course of his 2-year contract, Ljungberg proved doubters wrong and had a decent season with Sounders, playing in the middle of the park. He was even invited to play in an MLS All Stars match, receiving most votes from all the players and staff involved in MLS and even captaining the team. Later that year he helped Sounders win the US Open Cup.

Chicago Fire

At the start of the 2010 season, Freddie Ljungberg was traded with

Chicago Fire

for a second-round selection in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. He spent his solitary season at Chicago Fire appearing in 15 matches and scoring 2 goals before announcing his decision to end his time with the club at the end of the season.

Celtic

January of 2011 saw the return of Freddie Ljungberg to European football when he joined the Scottish giants, Celtic, following a week-long trial at the club. he made his debut for the club against Berwick Rangers and went on to represent Celtic for a total of 8 times before deciding to leave the club at the end of the season.

Following his brief time at Celtic, Freddie Ljungberg joined the J-League side, Shimizu S-Pulse for the remainder of the 2011 J-League season. he ended up appearaing for the Japanese club in 8 matches before leaving the club in February of 2012. A short time after his departure from Shimizu, Ljungberg became a brand ambassador for the Premier League before eventually retiring from football altogether on 24 August of 2012.

Freddie Ljungberg came out of his retirement in 2014 to play for Mumbai City to help and promote the launch of the Indian Super League alongside some former European superstars like Robert Pires and Luis Garcia. But his comeback was cut short due to injuries once again plaguing him, which prompted him to cancel his contract after only 4 games with Mumbai City. Making them the last team that Freddie Ljungberg ever played for before retiring for good.

But his infamous goal against Chelsea in the FA Cup win of 2002 comes to mind, when after an incredible solo run, he put the ball into the right-hand corner of

Chelsea
