How will Sweden line up at UEFA Euro 2020?

For the first time, Sweden qualified for the Euros in 1992, as it reached the semi-finals and this was their best-ever achievement so far although they finished third at the World Cup two years later.

They also made the Euro squad to the quarters in 2004 but were unable to make it out of the group in 2000, 2008, 2012 and 2016.

Currently, they have pinned all their hope on their progress from the group stages for the first time since 2004. Although they have consisted of rather old components, with the help of new attacking talent and a favourable draw, Sweden has the potential to go very far.

After all, they have one of their most promising squads in years, so they will be looking to send shockwaves around Europe at Euro 2020.

Yet contentious as it seems,

would not be part of the

Sweden Euro 2020 squad

in as much as he has suffered from a knee injury and won't be fit in time, even though he had reversed his international retirement decision in January.

How will Sweden line up at UEFA Euro 2020?

Sweden squad for Euro 2021

would face Spain, Slovakia and Poland in Group E. Manager Borek Dockal announced his provisional list of the 26-man Sweden Euro 2020 squad. The list is as following:

• Goalkeepers

  : Karl-Johan Johnsson, Kristoffer Nordfeldt, Robin Olsen

• Defenders

  : Emil Krafth, Victor Lindelof, Marcus Danielson, Martin Olsson, Ludwig Augustinsson, Pontus Jansson, Filip Helander, Mikael Lustig, Andreas Granqvist

• Midfielders

  : Emil Forsberg, Ken Sema, Viktor Claesson, Dejan Kulusevski, Sebastian Larsson, Albin Ekdal, Kristoffer Olsson, Jens-Lys Cajuste, Mattias Svanberg, Gustav Svensson

• Forwards

  : Marcus Berg, Alexander Isak, Robin Quaison, Jordan Larsson

The starting XI of the Sweden Euro 2020 squad would not be that much different from the one that underwent a  2-0 defeat in the 2018 World Cup quarter-final by England.

Hence our prediction for the starting eleven in Sweden Euro 2020 would be on the basis of 4-3-3 formation. If they use this formation properly, it makes a compelling case for being the most devastating formation in football.

The success of this formation relies on the potentials of the three midfielders either central or attacking ones. In this case, Sebastian Larsson,

and Emil Forsberg are skilful enough at creating and causing danger.

Despite the fact that Larsson is 36 years old, he has made over 120 caps and he still would pose a threat from set-pieces.

If they line up in 4-3-3 formation, with just one dedicated striker like Alexander Isak, the presence of wingers who can create plays cutting in from the flanks as the likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Robin Quaison is binding in supporting the striker.

Most importantly, the formation is in desperate need of intelligent fullbacks like Victor Lindelof, Marcus Danielson, Ludwig Augustinsson who know when to attack on the overlap or maintain defensive shape to the end of preventing the players from being caught out of position unnecessarily.

GK: Robin Olsen

When Robin Olsen was transferred to

from AS Roma in a season-long loan in 2020, his debut in a Premier League match at Newcastle United was on 1 November and in seven top-flight appearances, he managed to record two shutouts.

He featured in 11 matches of the 2020/21 season and played in three FA Cup ties and the League Cup quarter-final meeting with Manchester United.

As an experienced Sweden international, he starred in his country's run to the last eight of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, when he kept three clean sheets and contributed 11 saves in four matches en route to them reaching the first quarter-final since 1994. That is the reason why he most probably would take part in

Sweden Euro 2020 squad

He also was called up for Sweden's squad for UEFA Euro 2016, as backup keeper for Andreas Isaksson. But with Sweden's early exit from the tournament, Isaksson retired and Olsen became their first-choice goalkeeper.

CB: Victor Lindelof

Victor Lindelof put away his first goal of the 2020–21 season in a 6–2 home victory over Leeds United on December 20, 2020.

On February 2, 2021, he played the entire 90 minutes in Manchester United's Premier League record-equalling 9–0 home victory over

He played the entire 120 minutes in Manchester United's 2021 UEFA Europa League Final loss to Villarreal after a 10–11 penalty shootout as he scored United's 10th penalty kick.

Lindelöf has played for Sweden at all levels, including under-17, under-19, under-21, and senior. He was a member of the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship-winning squad.

In March 2016, he earned his senior international debut for his country, starting all three of their group games at UEFA Euro 2016.

In a 3–0 victory over Bulgaria in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification at Friends Arena, Lindelöf scored his first international goal for Sweden, so he is qualified enough to play in

Sweden Euro 2020 squad

. Besides in May 2018, he was nominated to Sweden's 23-man World Cup squad in Russia.

CB: Marcus Danielson

Danielson was sold to the Chinese club

for more than 50 million SEK on February 28, 2020, becoming Djurgården's most expensive outbound transfer ever, so it is crystal clear why he would possibly contribute to Sweden Euro 2020 squad.

Likewise, his debut for Dalian took place on 26 July 2020, as he scored a goal in a 2–3 loss to Shandon Luneng. At the international stage, he was called up by the Sweden national team squad for the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying games against Malta and Spain as a substitute for the central defender Pontus Jansson who suffered from an injury.

He scored from a corner ten minutes into his debut, as Sweden ran up to a 4–0 victory over Malta. He also put away his second international goal in a 2–1 victory over Croatia in the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League.

LB: Ludwig Augustinsson

who is often referred to as a true modern wing-back currently plays for Bundesliga club Werder Bremen.

When the club faced 1. FC Heidenheim in the second leg of the Bundesliga relegation playoff on July 6, 2020, following a 0–0 tie in the first leg, he netted in the 90+4th minute to give Werder Bremen a 2–1 lead.

As a result, Bremen stayed in the Bundesliga on away goals as the game ended 2–2. Therefore his presence in Sweden Euro 2020 squad might be rather crucial.

Augustinsson was a member of the Swedish under-21 team that qualified for and went on to win the European U21 Championship in 2015, appearing in all five games of the main competition and scoring in the penalty shootout against Portugal in the final.

His first appearance for the senior national team was in January 2015, and he was part of Sweden's Euro 2016 squad as well. Likewise, he was nominated to Sweden's 23-man World Cup squad in Russia in May 2018.

RB: Emil Krafth

CM: Albin Ekdal

Having appeared 33 times for his Bundesliga club Sampdoria, he managed to rack up two goals and one assist in season 2020_21 in all competitions.

As he made his senior international debut for Sweden in 2011, since then he made more than 50 caps for the national team, that is the reason why he would play in Sweden Euro 2020 competitions.

Moreover, he represented them at UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup as in June 2018 his name was in Sweden's 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, starring in all five games of a run to the quarter-finals.

AM: Emil Forsberg

Being voted as the Swedish Midfielder of the Year in 2016 and 2017, he scored a brace in the stoppage time in a 2–2 draw against

On the international stage, he debuted for the Swedish national team in a match against North Korea in the 2013 King's Cup. Just after three days, he put away his first goal for Sweden in a 3–0 victory over Finland in the final of the tournament.

Besides, in 2015, he was a member of the Sweden U21 team that won the UEFA European Under–21 Championship in the Czech Republic. During the tournament, he appeared four times, coming on as a substitute in each, while he netted one goal in the semi-finals against Denmark.

On the international stage, his senior international debut for Sweden was on 18 November 2019, as he came on as a substitute for Ken Sema in a 3–0 victory over the Faroe Islands in the last game of the Euro 2020 qualifying stage.

On 8 September 2020, he made his first start for Sweden and played 90 minutes before he was substituted for Albin Ekdal in a 0–2 defeat to Portugal in the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League.

Likewise on 14 November 2020, he managed to score his first international goal against Croatia in a 2–1 home victory in the Nations League.

ST: Alexander Isak

As the youngest ever goal-scorer of the Sweden national team,

is a full international since 2017, who has won more than 20 caps for his country despite being 21 years old.

Right from the onset, it is apparently clear what a pivotal role he would play in the Sweden Euro 2020 squad which is consisted of rather old components.

He began the second game against Slovakia, scoring the opening goal in a 6–0 victory in the 19th minute, becoming Sweden's youngest goalscorer ever.

Moreover, he scored his first competitive goal for Sweden on 7 June 2019, when they defeated Malta in a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying game as he put away the last goal in a 3–0 victory.
