Gregg Berhalter remains eligible for US head coach role after investigation
Out-of-contract Gregg Berhalter remains an option for United States men's national team coaching job.
confirmed on Monday that an independent investigation concluded that
Gregg Berhalterdid not improperly withhold information about a domestic violence allegation involving the women who later became his wife.
They released a statement alongside the report, which read:
"Given the investigators' conclusion, Gregg Berhalter remains a candidate to serve as head coach of the Men's National Team.”
U.S. Soccer announced in January that they have hired a law firm to oversee an investigation of manager Gregg Berhalter over details surrounding an altercation that occurred in 1991.
USA forward Giovanni Reyna's mother Danielle, a former roommate and team-mate of Berhalter's wife Rosalind, brought the incident to the attention of US Soccer in December after Berhalter decided to leave his son on the bench at the
World Cup.Berhalter admitted to kicking his wife in 1992, but the two reconciled after the fight, got married, and have four children.
"Rosalind and I respect the process that U.S. soccer went through. We are grateful that it is concluded and look forward to what's next," B
erhalter said in a statement to ESPN on Monday.
Dan Segal, an attorney representing the Reynas including Gio, issued a statement on behalf of the family on Monday night.
"
Claudio and Danielle acknowledge that they have said and done things in the heat of the moment that they regret, particularly the statement that triggered the US Soccer investigation,"
the statement read.
"Gio acknowledges that, like countless players before, he showed too much disappointment when not selected to play at the World Cup.
"That is only part of the story here, but the only side of the story that the investigators chose to tell. It is disheartening and grossly unfair to see the family turned into one-dimensional caricatures to progress a narrative that benefits others. Hopefully, as a US Soccer community we are better than that.”
Berhalter's contract with the U.S. Soccer federation expired at the end of 2022 and the role is currently vacant.
