"He wanted to be the most important man on the pitch", Dortmund CEO slams referee after Chelsea defeat

Kai Havertz scored the second goal for Chelsea from the penalty spot in the second half after the referee Danny Makkelie with the help of VAR decided that Marius Wolf blocked Ben Chilwell's cross with his hand. Havertz missed his first attempt, but the referee allowed him to take another penalty due to encroachment.

After the game, Dortmund chief executive officer Watzke accused the referee of arrogance and claimed he was easily swayed by the Stamford Bridge atmosphere.

"You always had the bad feeling that he wanted to be the most important man on the pitch,"

he told SID.

"His gestures, his facial expressions, he really liked [to perform to the crowd].

"Instinct was a foreign word to him. We lost control of the game too early, and congratulations to Chelsea. They deserve to go through.

"But the decision to retake the penalty was very controversial and the original call itself was a 50-50 decision. There's no question about that at all.”

Jude Bellingham called the decision to retake the penalty a ‘joke’.

Dortmund midfielder Emre Can also criticised the performance of the referee and even blamed him for their defeat.

"The referee was to blame,"

"We're playing here at Stamford Bridge. Maybe the referee is afraid of the fans. UEFA should send another referee. That's just not possible."
