Chelsea midfielder Jorginho joins Arsenal in a permanent deal

The Gunners have finally secured a backup to injury-prone Thomas Partey.

Following the week-long chase of Brighton midfielder, Moises Caicedo, who they didn’t manage to sign,


have gone for the more reliable and cheaper option of adding a much-needed reinforcement to their midfield by signing Chelsea’s Jorginho.

The Italian 31-year-old was reported to be a target for Arsenal yesterday and has always been a player that Arteta himself has been a big fan of.


joins Arsenal in a deal that runs until 2024 but has an option for a further year as Arsenal pays Chelsea £10m plus 2 million in potential add-ons as a transfer fee.

The Gunners’ boss Arteta spoke about the move, stating:

"Jorginho is a midfield player with intelligence, deep leadership skills and a huge amount of Premier League and international experience. Jorginho has won in his career, but he still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here."

The player himself additionally spoke about Arteta’s influence in him joining Arsenal, saying:

“He was a big influence because I know that he tried a few times to get me before and it didn’t happen due to other reasons, not because of my wishes. So of course, he had a big influence."

Finally Arsenal’s director who actually made the deal happen spoke about Jorginho’s qualities, stating:

"Jorginho is an established professional with a strong mentality who brings quality and experience. He is a player who fits our style of play, and he joins us at a very good moment where he can contribute in a key position to help maintain our momentum."
