Hugo Lloris announces retirement from international duty
Two-time World Cup finalist Hugo Lloris has stepped away from international duty at the age of 36.
After more than 14 years representing Les Bleus, France captain
Hugo Llorishas decided to retire from international duty.
Having won the 2018 World Cup and 2020-21 Nations League, Lloris also was part of the France squad as they reached the finals of Euro 2016 and 2022 World Cup only to be beaten by Portugal and Argentina, respectively.
Apart from being one of the main reasons that France reached the 2022 World Cup final, Lloris broke the record for most appearances for Les Bleus with 145 caps. The Tottenham shot-stopper announced his retirement plans in an interview where he also named
Mike Maignanas his would-be replacement.
"There comes a time when you have to know how to pass the hand,"
Lloris told L'Equipe.
"I don't want to make it my own, I've always said and repeated that the France team doesn't belong to anyone, and we all have to make sure that's the case, me first. I think that behind [me], the team is ready to continue, there is also a goalkeeper who is ready [Maignan]."
"I prefer to go out being at the top than to wait for a drop in speed, or too much competition,"
he added.
"There is also a family choice, I feel the need to spend more time with my wife and my children."
