In a shocking move, Roberto Martinez is set to be appointed as Portugal’s manager

After leading Belgium’s so-called Golden Generation, Roberto Martinez now joins Portugal as their new head coach

The Athletic has reported that Roberto Martinez will shortly be appointed as

Portugal

’s new head coach after reaching a verbal agreement with them. The former Belgium manager departed from his post at Belgium after they failed to make it out of the World Cup group stage.

Martinez however, denied that he was let go as he claimed this was planned.

“I don’t resign. It’s the end of my contract... It has been six years. I arrived with the clear idea of qualifying for the [2018] World Cup. Then we became so engaged with the project and won the bronze medal. I’m so proud of these players."

Martinez, who had stints at Wigan and Everton before taking the job at Belgium, is set to be announced as the new Portugal boss in the coming week as the two sides have already reached a verbal agreement.

Portugal have also parted with Fernando Santos after their quarter-final exit against Morocco. Santos helped Portugal win the 2016 Euros but his defensive tactics grew many criticisms.
