Virgil van Dijk set for a spell on sidelines with his injury worse than expected

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury at Brentford.

Van Dijk

 was substituted at half-time against

Brentford

due to a hamstring injury. After the game, Jurgen Klopp said his problem is not serious but reports on Wednesday suggest that the injury Van Dijk picked up against Brentford could be worse than first feared and could keep him out on the sidelines for weeks. Further assessments this week will confirm how long Van Dijk will be out of action.

Speaking after the 3-1 defeat against Brentford, Klopp said of Van Dijk's injury:

“Virgil felt a little bit his muscle, but he said he’s fine and he’s a very good judge of these things.

“I didn’t want to take any risk. The physios looked quite happy when I said I didn’t want to take a risk. It’s not an injury, he just felt the intensity.”

Liverpool

is also without Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Roberto Firmino, Arthur Melo, and James Milner at the moment. Liverpool will face Wolves in the FA Cup on Saturday and then will play against Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea in the Premier League in January.

Joel Matip, who replaced Van Dijk on Monday night, is now likely to come into the team to partner Ibrahima Konate in the back four. Klopp also can play Joe Gomez in Van Dijk's absence.
