Japan renews Hajime Moriyasu's contract until after the 2026 World Cup
After guiding his side to the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup, Japan extended Moriyasu's contract until the 2026 World Cup.
Beating Germany and Spain in the group stage,
Japan
proceeded to the next level as the group E winners. They faced the 2018 World Cup runner-ups Croatia in the last 16, where they were defeated in the penalty shoot-out.
As a result of his successful run, Japan decided to extend
Hajime Moriyasu
’s contract until after the 2026 World Cup. Japan Football Association head Kozo Tajima said the 54-year-old's new contract will run
"until the next World Cup".
Moriyasu said of his reappointment:
"This is really the happiest job.
"It's a job that gives me a chance to compete on a global stage with the pride of being Japanese. That's why I decided to accept the offer.”
After the defeat to Croatia, Moriyasu insisted Japan is on the right path. He said:
"We weren't able to overcome this hurdle of losing in the last 16 and you might say that we didn't achieve anything new.
"But the players have shown us something that we haven't seen before by beating former champions like Germany and Spain."
