Breaking: Benzema announces international retirement from France

After missing Qatar 2022's final due to injury, the Real Madrid striker announces his decision on his 35th birthday.

Scoring 37 goals in 97 caps for Les Blues,

Karim Benzema

missed the 2022 World Cup due to injury, despite hoping to play a big part for France after missing their Russia 2018 triumph due to blackmail investigations.

Off the back of an injury he suffered with Real Madrid, the striker suffered another injury during his first full training session with

France

, which led him leaving the France squad.

Now, after winning Ballon d'Or, Benzema announced his retirement on his 35th birthday in a Twitter post. He stated:

"I made the efforts and the mistakes it took to be where I am today and I'm proud of it!

"I have written my story and ours is ending."

France came short to defend the World Cup title in Qatar 2022's final, where they lost in the penalty shoot-out after 120 minutes which saw a 3-3 result.

After Benzema missed the 2022 World Cup, Didier Deschamps said: "I

'm extremely sorry for Karim who had made this World Cup a major objective

."
