"I still can't believe it, we did it!", says Messi after Argentina World Cup tiumph

Football legend Lionel Messi says he still can not believe that he finally has won the World Cup with Argentina.

Argentina ends a 36-year wait for World Cup glory with a victory against France on the penalties in Qatar on Sunday.

Messi who scored twice in the final finished his tournament with seven goals to become the first player in World Cup history who has scored in each knockout round of the tournament - the last-16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final.

"I dreamt about it so many times, I wanted it so much that I still can't believe it,"

Messi posted on Instagram.

"Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us. We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim.

"The merit is of this group, which is above individuals, is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the one of all Argentinians... We did it!!!"

Messi

played in his 26th World Cup match in the final and become the player with the most appearances at World Cups. During the game, he also became the player who has played the most minutes at a World Cup with 2,216 minutes and overtook Italy legend Paolo Maldini's record.

Messi insisted he has no intention of retiring and wants to continue playing for

Argentina

"I enjoy being in the national team, the group, I want to continue living a few more games being world champion,"

he told TyC Sports.
