Deschamps postpones France contract renewal despite Macron’s order

Despite leading France to back-to-back World Cup finals, Deschamps' men failed to defend the trophy as they lost to Argentina in the penalties following a 3-3 result after 120 minutes. Talking post-match, Deschamps postpones contract renewal to January.

Thanks to a hat-trick from Kylian Mbappe,

France

came twice from behind as they settled on a 3-3 draw after 120 minutes. However,

Argentina

won the penalties 4-2 as they stole the World Cup trophy from the Frenchmen.

Despite President Macron’s order for

Didier Deschamps

’ contract renewal, the French coach postpones the negotiations. He told the reporters after the final whistle:

"Even if we'd won, I wouldn't reply to that question tonight. I'm sad for my players and staff...I'll have a meeting with the president at the beginning of next year and then you'll find out.

"The squad has been facing a tricky situation...maybe that had a physical and psychological impact. But I had no concerns about the players who started. They were 100% fit but we only had four days since the last match so perhaps there is some tiredness."
