Portugal sacks Fernando Santos following World Cup controversial exit

Despite winning two major trophies with Portugal, a quarter-final loss against Morocco and controversies surrounding benching Ronaldo, became the fatal flaw to Santos' Portugal career as FPF officially confirms the sacking of the manager.

Winning the 2016 European Championship and the 2019 edition of the Nations League,

Portugal

had high hopes with their manager

Fernando Santos

to deliver yet another major trophy to the nation that had only reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup three times.

However, a 1-0 loss to Morocco in

Qatar 2022'

s quarter-finals, in addition to his fallout with their captain,

Cristiano Ronaldo

, has officially ended Fernando Santos' coaching career at Portugal. Jose Mourinho is mentioned as the suited candidate to replace him.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said in a statement:

"The FPF and Fernando Santos agreed to end the highly successful journey that began in September 2014.

"After one of the best participations ever by the national team in the final stages of the World Cup, in Qatar, FPF and Fernando Santos understand that this is the right moment to start a new cycle.

"It was an honor to have a coach and a person like Fernando Santos at the head of the national team.

"The FPF thanks Fernando Santos and his technical team for the services provided over eight unique years and believes that this thanks is also made on behalf of the Portuguese people."
