Frappart becomes Qatar 2022's first female referee in Germany's game

Already the first woman referee in the men's Champions League, Ligue 1, and World Cup qualifiers, Frappart breaks a new record as she was appointed to referee Germany's final group match against Costa Rica on Thursday in an all-female refereeing team.

The 38-year-old French referee is set to make another record to her name as it's been announced that

will referee

Germany

's

decisive Thursday game against

Costa Rica

as only need will help the Germans proceed to the next level of the tournament.

FIFA announced the news in a tweet:

This Thursday, an all-female refereeing trio will take charge of a men’s FIFA World Cup match for the first time. Stéphanie Frappart will be joined by assistants Neuza Back and Karen Diaz in overseeing Costa Rica against Germany. History in the making!”

Despite refereeing in Champions League, Ligue 1, and World Cup qualifiers, Frapparat has also refereed the Super Cup match between Liverpool and Chelsea in 2019 as well as the

Women's World Cup final

in the same year between the USA and the Netherlands.

Frappart said about her World Cup inclusion:

"It's a strong sign from FIFA and the authorities to have women referees in that country

.”
