Ecuador 1–2 Senegal: Sarr and Koulibaly send Senegal to the next round

Senegal faced Ecuador in their final Group A match while only a win could be sufficient to send the AFCON champions to the knockout stage of the tournament with the South Americans tending to hold on to the one-point advantage they secured against the Netherlands.

Netherlands and Ecuador led the group with four points with Senegal chasing them with three points as Ecuador had the chance to push for the first-place spot with a victory. Meanwhile, Senegal was eager to push for a victory.

As predicted,

Senegal

started the game at a higher speed while Ecuador was pleased to control the possession. Idrissa Gueye and Ndiaye both sent chances wide before Senegal eventually scored the opener from the penalty spot through Sarr from a foul he himself took.

Senegal held to their lead for the second half while

Ecuador

was this time trying their luck. Ecuador eventually scored the equalizer through Caicedo after a great corner delivery by Plata. Senegal responded quickly with Kalidou Koulibaly scoring his side's second goal in the 70th minute. With all of their efforts shut down by Senegal's solid defense, Ecuador failed to score the equalizer and eventually the 2-1 victory sent the AFCON champions to the next round of the tournament as the group runner-ups. They will most likely face England in the next round of the competition.
