Van Gaal aims to ‘assess Depay’ after the Senegal match

Barcelona star Memphis Depay made a brief cameo in Netherlands’ 2-0 victory over Senegal but his fitness still remains to be assessed.

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal has stated that he will assess Memphis Depay’s fitness following Monday’s match against Senegal.

Davy Klaassen and Cody Gakpo were the heroes in Oranje’s victory over African champions

Senegal

in the second match of Group A. a victory that Depay had little part to play in the first half since he started on the bench due to a hamstring issue.

But van Gaal brought in the forward in the last half an hour and Depay managed to be involved in the buildup for both of Netherlands goals.

"We had agreed before the game that he would play about half an hour,"

Van Gaal said of Depay.

"With Ecuador, he will want to play, but I have to assess his form after this game. I never thought we would lose and, with the entry of Depay, I wanted to have more chances to score. He is a player who can make the difference."

The victory over Senegal also marked a special occasion for van Gaal as well, since it was his 38th victory in charge of the

Oranje

which would put van Gaal above any manager in Oranje’s history.

Van Gaal was praising of players like Gakpo and Noppert but wanted improvements as well.

"Gakpo was decisive, I left him inside because he knows how to score goals and is very agile,"

Van Gaal added.

"Senegal had three chances, but we have a goalkeeper who knows his stuff between the posts.

"We didn't play very well, too many times we gave them the ball and the chance to score. We had to be more compact. We can only improve, there was probably some tension between the players."
