Lloris wants France players to focus on football rather than politics

France captain, Hugo Lloris says he wants to focus on football and leave the rest of the issues to politicians but he admits that he "cannot remain insensitive" over these issues.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar and particularly the country’s human rights' issues have come under serious scrutiny, as we get closer to the World Cup. the country’s outlawing of the same-sex relationships and immigrant labor laws have made the headlines which has prompted many to speak on the matter.

Hugo Lloris will be one of the 9 captains in the tournament that will be wearing a special armband in support of the OneLove campaign which raises awareness for the LGBTQ+ community. This was met coldly by FFF president Le Graet however, as he called for everyone to respect the laws of each country.

"I have my personal opinion and that is in line with that of the president [French Football Federation (FFF) president Noel Le Graet].”

Lloris told the press.

"When we welcome foreigners to

, we want them to follow our rules and respect our culture. I will do the same when I go to Qatar. We may not agree with that, but I will show respect.

"We cannot remain insensitive to these subjects. We are asking more and more of the players.

"But I believe that we must keep the focus on the game. Outside, everyone is free to express themselves and defend their opinions."

The

shot-stopper feels that Qatar’s human rights laws shouldn’t be addressed by football players but rather politicians: "

There’s too much pressure on the players. We are at the bottom of the chain.

"If you have to apply pressure, first of all it had to be 10 years ago. Now it’s too late.

"You have to understand that for players this opportunity happens every four years and you want every chance to succeed. The focus has to be on the field. The rest is for politicians. We are athletes."
