Moratti recalls Calciopoli and insists that ‘Inter was robbed’

Inter Milan’s former president, Massimo Moratti, recalls the Calciopoli scandal and how both Inter and Serie A in general got the worst of it.

The infamous Calciopoli scandal perhaps altered the course of Italian football. The event resulted in Champions

being relegated to Serie B, and stripped of their last two titles, as well as Inter Milan becoming the default winners of the 2005-06 title.

Almost two decades after the event, Calciopoli is still a touchy subject in Italy. Recently Inter Milan’s then-president Massimo Moratti chimed into the matter saying that:

“Absolutely, I know Juventus fans won’t like it, but this makes me insist. That title was the minimum we could get after being robbed. We should have received even more.”

He also made his feelings about Juventus director Luciano Moggi clear and the fact that he wanted to join Inter Milan.

“It is true, and although I never explicitly told him that I didn’t want him, I’d never hire him. Serie A was manipulated, and we were the victims. Juventus were deputed to win, and if it wasn’t them, then it was Milan‘s turn. It was shameful because the biggest form of dishonesty is cheating people’s feelings.”

 Moratti told Gazzetta.

The most successful director in Inter Milan’s history, Moratti oversaw the Nerazzurri winning 5 Serie A titles,4 Coppa Italia, and a UEFA Cup, as well as the esteemed Champions League title before selling the club in 2013.
