Official: Aston Villa appoint Unai Emery as new manager
Aston Villa have announced the appointment of Unai Emery, with the former Villarreal coach to be once again in the Premier League.
tried to appoint
Sporting CP
manager Ruben Amorim as
Steven Gerrard
's successor but informed on Monday that he had no interest in taking over at Villa Park despite encouraging first discussions.
It was revealed last week that Villa's management was also considering former
Arsenalmanager Emery, and the Spaniard has decided to quit Villarreal in favour of a return to the
Premier League
- less than three years after losing his position at the Emirates.
Villa have not revealed the duration of Emery's contract, but sources have told 90min that about £6 million was necessary to sign the 50-year-old out of his Villarreal contract. After work permit procedures are finalised, he will begin his new employment on November 1.
Emery brings a lot of knowledge and a solid resume to the Midlands. He has won the Europa League a record-setting four times, three times with Sevilla and once with Villarreal, as well as six trophies during his brief tenure as
Paris Saint-head Germain's coach.
Former Rangers manager Gerrard was fired after just 11 months on the job, due to a dismal run of form that generated just nine points in the club's first eleven Premier League games.
