Joe Gomez changes his Liverpool number
Nathaniel Clyne was the last player for Liverpool to wear the number two shirt, but Joe Gomez is now wearing it.
Joe Gomez
has changed his
Liverpoolsquad number for the 2022–23 season and promised to replace any shirts bought with his old number.
The defender has worn number 12 since he joined Liverpool from
Charlton Athletic
in 2015. Injuries and the play of
Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, and Ibrahima Konate have made it harder for him to play at his preferred center-back position in recent seasons.
But the 25-year-old England international has taken the number two shirt for the new season, which starts for Liverpool this Saturday in the Community Shield against Premier League champions Manchester City.
Usually, a right-number back's in English football, the switch could mean that Gomez will have to play second fiddle to Trent Alexander-Arnold again this coming season. However, Liverpool has also brought in promising youngster
Calvin Ramsey
from Aberdeen.
A club statement confirmed that Gomez had offered to pay back anyone who bought a replica shirt with "Gomez 12" on it for the 2022-23 season. Sadio Mane moved to Bayern Munich, so the number 10 shirt at Liverpool is still open for the new season.
