Ajax sign Bassey as Martinez’s replacement

Following an impressive season with rangers, Calvin Bassey will make a move to Ajax to be Lisandro Martinez’s replacement as the latter is going out the exit door.

Ajax

penned a deal with

Calvin Bassey

on a deal worth €23million (£19.6m) that may rise to €26.5m (£22.6m) with add-ons.

The defender will be

Lisandro Martinez

’s replacement, who is on the verge of sealing a move to

Manchester United

to reunite with

Erik ten Hag

, who was his former boss.

The 22-year-old has penned a five-year contract and he has joined his team-mates in Austria who are getting ready for the pre-season games.

Although he was born in Italy, Bassey plays for Nigeria national team. He became a regular player at

Rangers

in the 2021-22 season as he performed impressively in their run to the final of the Europa League, going past the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Braga, and RB Leipzig.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side were defeated at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt, however. Despite all that, Bassey was able to show his abilities and attracted the attention of many clubs around the world.

He featured in 65 matches for Rangers after joining from Leicester City in 2020, contributing to the Scottish Premiership victory in the 2020-21 season as well as the Scottish Cup last season.

Rangers started their act on replacing Bassey on Tuesday as they penned with Ben Davies from Liverpool, with the deal being around £3m, with a further £1m in add-ons.
