Manchester City set to sign Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips

Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips is close to joining Premier League champions Manchester City.

According to the English press,

Manchester City

has agreed to a deal with

Leeds

for midfielder

Kalvin Phillips

worth £45m. It is expected he will officially join City in the coming days.

Signing a central midfielder was City’s priority to fill the void left by Fernandinho. The English player was Pep Guardiola’s top target to strengthen his options in the midfield. Manchester United was also interested in signing him but Phillips out of loyalty to Leeds has rejected their offer.

The 26-year-old Phillips who is a graduate of Leeds' academy, has played in 234 appearances in all competitions for Leeds and played a big role in their promotion to the Premier League in 2020.

He was a key player for England at Euro 2020 but made just 20 Premier League appearances last season due to injuries.

Phillips will be City's second signing this summer after Erling Haaland. English press claims that City is also interested in signing Brighton & Hove Albion full-back Marc Cucurella and currently is negotiating with them.

Gabriel Jesus is close to leaving City to join Arsenal for £50m. The future of Raheem Sterling and Oleksandr Zinchenko is also in doubt.
