Casillas on Real Madrid: "We want to put the icing on the cake"

Iker Casillas says that Real Madrid's wins over Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Manchester City won't be complete if they lose to Liverpool.

Iker Casillas

Real Madrid

legend, thinks that the team's run to the

Champions League final

on Saturday will mean nothing if they lose to Liverpool in the end.

Casillas has played in 725 games for Los Blancos, second only to Raul Gonzalez. He has won the Champions League three times with the club, including the famous La Decima in 2014.

Madrid's run to the final on Saturday has been very exciting. They beat Paris Saint-Germain,

Chelsea

, and Manchester City despite being down in all three knockout games. Casillas said in a piece for the Player's Tribune that it won't matter much if Liverpool wins the trophy on Saturday instead.

"The comebacks are great, but now we have to get it. "We need the cherry on top," Casillas said in an article for the Players Tribune. "You know that if you don't get that frosting, the cake won't be finished, right? "No one will remember what happened with

PSG

, Chelsea, and

Manchester City

if the cup doesn't make it to the displays. To be exciting, it has to be until the end, when you get the prize.

"One step away from glory for the 14th time, people think it's easy to win the Champions League, but it's not. If getting to the semi-finals of the Champions League is a big deal, then getting one, two, or three cups must be a big deal.

The 41-year-old singled out Madrid goalkeeper

Thibaut Courtois

. With 21 clean sheets in 50 games in all competitions, Courtois has been a key part of Madrid's LaLiga title and run to Saturday's final.

Even though he says Courtois is the best goalkeeper in the world, he is also proud of the fact that Casillas' athletic and flexible style in goal has been looked up to for a long time.

"Courtois gets his own paragraph, and I don't think anyone would argue that he is the best goalkeeper in the world right now," he said. "I feel the same way about Karim [Benzema]. Get that award if you want to go up even more. And he deserves it more than anyone else because he was key to Madrid making it to the final in Paris.

"I'm glad that, like Luis Arconada, he was inspired by my stops and videos as he grew up. Tomorrow, there will be another kid who wants to be like Courtois. But, in short, I'm glad to have been a part of his life."
