RFEF president denies intervening in Olympic decisions for Pique

The RFEF president has answered the claims that the Barcelona centre-back asked for his help to make his way into the 2020 Olympic squad.

Royal Spanish Football Federation president

Luis Rubiales

has denied claims of doing anything wrong after reports emerged of

Gerard Pique

asking him to help him get selected for the Tokyo Olympics’ squad.

Spanish publication El Confidential has published the conversation between Rubiales and Pique regarding his involvement in the Supercopa de Espana being moved to Saudi Arabia.

However, appear seems to be asking him to make sure he is part of the 2020 Olympic Games, aiming to come back to Spain after he called it quits in 2018.

Pique is allegedly heard telling Rubiales in one audio message:

"You have to do this for me Rubi, you have to get it for me," talking about a place in the Olympic squad under Luis de la Fuente. The Barcelona player is also said to slam Sergio Ramos’ public request to be included.

During Wednesday’s news conference, however, the president denied the allegations and doing anything wrong, insisting that it is “normal” for players to ask such things.

"Maybe another one [player] appears who asked me to, and it's not Pique. I'm going to keep talking to them like that. I have a conversation with someone I've known for years and I speak as I speak," Rubiales said.

"There were more [players] who asked me. He [Pique] announced a long time ago that he did not want to return, and I spoke with Luis de la Fuente so that he would know who had called me.

"It is common when one is a great player and he wants to come back [to the national team]. Then Luis made a very different decision. We act with the utmost honesty. He is not the only footballer who has asked me to do so."

Pique and Ramos were not part of the squad, and

Spain

went on to grab the silver medal following a 2-1 loss at the hands of

Brazil

in the final.

Moreover, the Supercopa move to Saudi Arabia has also attracted attention, with the federation being accused of focusing on financial need for clubs like Real Madrid and

Barcelona

to stay involved.

"We sell the TV rights to the final all over the world. There are some countries that wait to bid when they are the finalists,"

Rubiales added.

"If there is a derby or Clasico, the offer multiplies a lot.

"That adds to the management and would affect the variable. [But] we have no idea who is going to play in the final."
