England's Steph Houghton might miss Euro 2022 after Achilles surgery

Steph Houghton, the skipper of Manchester City, is poised to miss further playing time after undergoing surgery for an Achilles problem that forced her to miss the Arnold Clark Cup.

Houghton hasn't featured in international football since playing for England at the Olympics last summer, having returned from a four-month injury absence in January.

The 33-year-current old's rehabilitation period has yet to be verified by the Cityzens, but it can jeopardize her spot in England's Euro 2022 squad if she does not return to full health by the conclusion of the WSL season.

Houghton is yet to make an appearance under new England boss

Sarina Wiegman

, having been compelled to withdraw from the team in September due to an injury sustained during a training session. She was subsequently unavailable for the remainder of the international breaks in October and November.

The former Leeds and Arsenal defender was expected to return for the Arnold Clark Cup, in which England triumphed after going undefeated against three of the world's finest teams. However, due to a recent injury relapse, she was once again passed over for selection.

In April, Houghton, who has been a regular starter for England for well over a decade and was named captain in 2015, will be 34.

If Houghton does not make the cut,

Leah Williamson

, who has traditionally worn the armband for the Lionesses under Wiegman, would be the favorite to be chosen captain for Euro 2022.
