Van Dijk praises Matip’s quality after his perfect goal for Liverpool
The Netherlands international revealed that he is jealous of Joel Matip’s quality after he netted a goal against Leeds United in Liverpool’s thumping 6-0 victory.
Virgil van Dijk
praised
Joel Matip
after the duo met the back of the net in
Liverpool’s 6-0 victory over
Leeds United, revealing he wishes he had Matip’s technical ability.
Matip found the target and opened his account for the season with an impressive goal, whereas Van Dijk scored the last goal after Sadio Mane’s double against Marcelo Bielsa’s men.
The Reds are sitting three points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City, while they enjoyed their 14 Premier League clean sheet this season, with only Manchester City having more (15).
However, Van Dijk hailed his partner’s dribbling ability following the German defender’s excellent goal.
"It [dribbling out from the back] is a big quality of his," Van Dijk told the club's website after the win.
"I wish I had that quality at times.
"He just can go without any fear at all and hope for the best a little bit.
"But he has that quality. It's a big strength of his and obviously it's useful because it drags other players from their position. Today, obviously, the space was there to make that run and finish it off.
"I said to him before the game I felt it coming because he had an assist for Diogo [Jota, in a recent 2-0 win over Leicester] and I said, 'A goal is next!'
"So, I'm obviously very happy for him."
