Iker Casillas hits out at Ballon d’Or after Messi win

Lionel Messi claimed the Ballon d’Or as he defeated Robert Lewandowski in the race for this year’s award.

Lionel Messi won the 2021 Ballon d’Or on Monday.

Robert Lewandowski

finished second as he failed to win his first Ballon d’Or award.

The Polish striker won a treble with

Bayern Munich

in 2020, but the award was cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, many observers believed Lewandowski also deserved this year’s award as his individual records were significantly better than the other contenders.

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas criticized the award after the last night’s ceremony.

“Each time it’s harder to believe in these football awards,”

he wrote on his Twitter account.

“For me, Messi is one of the five best players in the whole history of football, but we have to start knowing who stands out most in a season.

“It is not that damn hard. Others make it difficult.”

Messi won this year’s Copa America tournament to end

Argentina

’s 28-year trophy drought. The PSG star boasts the record for most Ballon d’Or awards, with Cristiano Ronaldo following him with five prizes.
