Marquinhos: Neymar’s World Cup comments were misinterpreted

The PSG captain believes his Selecao teammate does not plan to retire after the upcoming World Cup.

Neymar’s recent comments on the 2022 World Cup being his last one was surprising for many observers, given that the PSG star is 29 years old.

In a new

DAZN

documentary called

Neymar & The Line Of Kings

, the Brazil international said:

"I think it's my last World Cup. I see it as my last because I don't know if I have the strength of mind to deal with football anymore.

"So I'll do everything to turn up well, do everything to win with my country, to realize my greatest dream since I was little. And I hope I can do it."

Neymar’s teammate Marquinhos believes the former Barca star’s comments have been misinterpreted, dismissing speculations around his potential retirement after the World Cup.

"I think his statements were misinterpreted,"

the defender told

Le Parisien

.

"He just said he didn't know what he would be like in four years. It makes sense, it's far. I don't know how I will be either.

"Neymar knows all the expectations around him and he understands them. He just meant that he was focused on the next World Cup. And above all, he was only talking about the national team and not the club.

"That too was misinterpreted. He does not intend to stop playing for PSG."

Neymar spearheaded Brazil’s efforts to win their sixth World Cup title in 2014 and 2020.

In 2014, he suffered a horrible injury in his side’s game against Colombia, before the Selecao were humiliated by a 7-1 defeat against Germany in the semi-finals.

Four years later, Neymar’s impressive performances once again haunted the tournament, but only to mark another painful elimination for Brazil. The Selecao were knocked out of the tournament after a 2-1 defeat against Belgium in the semi-finals.
