Belgium's Roberto Martinez to replace Ronald Koeman at Barcelona

According to Goal, have already decided to dispense with the services of current coach Ronald Koeman after a disappointing start to the season.

The outlet reports

that Barcelona have already opened up negotiations with Roberto Martinez about becoming their next manager.

A 3-0 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich and further disappointments in La Liga seemingly will cost Ronald Koeman his job as the Belgium manager emerges as the favored candidate for the position.

Barca’s president, Joan Laporta, reportedly admires Martinez and had him in mind for the top coaching job before he was appointed to the Barca board in March.

Having been knocked out from the last four at Euro 2016 at the hands of Wales, Marc Wilmots was sacked by Belgium and was replaced by Roberto Martinez, who after another failure in Euro 2020 was tipped to step down from the Belgium job.

Having close ties with Barcelona, the Catalunya-born Martinez and Jordi Cruyff, son of club legend Johan, are godparents to each other's children.

Barca executives have told Martinez that he is their number one choice to succeed Koeman, whose position at the club has become more tenuous than ever this week with

successive Liga draws against Granada and Cadiz

.

Goal has also reported that Barcelona has contacted other potential candidates to succeed Koeman. Club legend

Xavi Hernandez

is reportedly the club’s alternative to Martinez.
