Osimhen sents off for punching but Napoli wins opener against Venezia

With goals from Lorenzo Insigne and Elif Elmas, Napoli opened up their Serie A season with a precious home victory over Venezia. However, their Nigerian forward stole the headlines when he was shown a red card for punching in the 23rd-minute.

The incident happened

when a 23rd-minute corner was about to come in and

Osimhen

was irritated with the close man-marking from Heymans.

Hence, shove his defender away, but in so doing he turned and caught Heymans on the throat with a fist. Being considered to be a punch, the referee opted for a straight red card.

However, a 62nd-minute penalty from

Insigne

 and another goal from

Elmas

 secured

Napoli

 all the three points in

their opening Serie A match against Venezia

.

It means

Osimhen will miss Napoli’s Serie A clash against Genoa

next week, but it may well be a longer ban.

Osimhen has contributed 10 goals and three assists in his debut season with the Partenopei after

signing from Lille for a €54m fee in 2020

, making 30 competitive appearances for the club last season.

However, he has shown a series of attitude problems during his stay with Napoli. It is the second time that Osimhen has been sent off in the Napoli jersey, after a second bookable offense in the Europa League win away to Real Sociedad in October 2020.

Last season

Osimhen

stole the headlines when he threw a birthday party in Nigeria and got COVID-19.

Gattuso

 said of the 22-year-old

in a press conference

:

“When I made a mistake, Marcello Lippi used to say he’d let me stew in my own juices for a while, to recognize what I’d done. That’s what Osimhen has to do now.

“He has already apologized, he’s a lad who gives his all when working. He made a silly mistake, he knows that. I am a coach, I don’t decide fines, especially as I was the one who gave the all-clear for him to return to Nigeria and so both of us were left embarrassed by what happened.

“He made a mistake and he will pay what he needs to pay.”
