Villarreal face injury crisis ahead of Super Cup final

Villarreal will face Chelsea in the match for the UEFA Super Cup trophy on Wednesday. The Spanish side have already arrived in Belfast ahead of the crucial battle, but they have traveled without a number of their key players.

Villarreal boss Unai Emery has spent a nightmarish preseason, which has sidelined multiple players of his squad either through injury or COVID-19 infection.

won’t be able to play for his side on Wednesday, while his backup option

 remains injured.

 have returned from their injuries. However, the two players might not be ready to play as they have not been able to train with the team until Monday. The Monday training also saw

 getting injured, further limiting Emery’s options in midfield.

 are also unavailable for the upcoming game.

The good news for Villarreal is the return of Pau Torres from the Spanish U23 team. Torres, who

at the Olympics, will be available to play for Emery’s side on Wednesday. The center-back will be given two weeks off to recover after the final, meaning he will not be able to play for the Yellow Submarine in their first two league matches against Granada and Espanyol.
