Austria's Arnautovic banned for one match in EURO for insulting player

Marko Arnautovic received a one-match suspension for insulting another player during Austria's 3-1 win against North Macedonia.

Marko Arnautovic, an ex-West Ham striker who came on as a second-half replacement and scored late in Austria's easy win, seemed enraged as he celebrated his goal until captain

intervened to keep him quiet.

On Thursday, he will miss Austria's

Euro 2020

encounter against the Netherlands. 

He expressed regret for his enraged attitude toward fans of North Macedonia but rejected using racism and bigotry against them. 

According to some accounts, the 32-year-rage old's was focused on North Macedonian players

, both of whom had Albanian ancestors.

"There were some heated words yesterday in the emotions of the game for which I would like to apologise - especially to my friends from North Macedonia and Albania," Arnautovic, who has Serbian background, said on Instagram.

"I would like to say one thing very clearly: I am not a racist. I have friends in almost every country and I stand for diversity. Everyone who knows me is aware of that."
