Messi overtakes Ronaldo’s record with his 57th free-kick goal

The Argentina international netted his 57th free-kick as he met the back of the net during the Copa America last night.

Lionel Messi

’s 57th free-kick goal moves him above

Cristiano Ronaldo

’s 56th. He netted his goal after 33 minutes into the match, which was his 73rd goal for his country during his 145 appearances.

However,

Argentina

did not get to grab all the points from the match against Chile, as Eduardo Vargas scored the equalizer and the game ended with a 1-1 draw.

It was not a strong start to the Copa America for the Argentine and co. as the

Barcelona

legend still aims for his first silverware in an international level.

Before the clash on Monday, Argentina and the Copa America paid tribute to football icon

Maradona

, who passed away at the age of 60.

Lights were lit up at the Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos before the start of the game and some iconic moments of his career were shown on the pitch, with a hologram creating Maradona juggling the ball.

At Euro 2020, Ronaldo has a chance to pull level with Messi as he is preparing to play for Portugal in their battle against Hungary.

It would be another record set by the 36-year-old as he has also set a record playing his fifth European Championship, aiming to score more for his country.
