Argentina striker Gonzalez laments his misses: "I have failed a lot"

The Argentina national football team were dissatisfied with Monday's 1-1 stalemate against Chile, with their forwards squandering many chances in front of the goal.

The Albiceleste's striker Nicolas Gonzalez took responsibility for his team's 1-1 tie with Chile at the

Copa America

on Monday, telling reporters that he "failed a lot" in the game. At the same time, Lionel Messi bemoaned a "complicated" contest.

In the 80th minute, Gonzalez headed a superb over-the-top assist from Messi over the bar with just the goalie to beat. But he wasn't the only Argentina player who squandered opportunities, as the team only converted one of their 18 shots on the night.

Messi

netted the Albiceleste's only goal on a free-kick, but

Eduardo Vargas

equalized for Chile.

"The game was complicated," Messi said. "We lacked calmness, having control of the ball and playing faster. The penalty changed the game.

"We wanted to start winning. Now we have Uruguay, which is also going to be difficult. But hey, we have to think about the next match now."

Apart from Messi's spectacular free-kick, Argentina was inefficient in front of goal, with

Gonzalez

bearing the brunt of the responsibility

"I am self-critical, today I have failed a lot," Gonzalez said. "We must be much finer [around the net]. I'm going to be angry but happy for some of the positives we showed today.

"We had a lot of goal situations. We entered a little asleep in the second half but later we were able to [evolve]."

Head coach

Lionel Scaloni

, on the other hand, was happy with the number of opportunities generated, and he encouraged his squad to finish those opportunities as the competition proceeds.

"I would be worried if the team did not generate goal situations," he said. "The important thing is that we do it, we put many players in the area."

He added: "We have a very rich squad. All the footballers who are here can play, that's why they came."

On Friday night, Messi and his teammates will play Uruguay in a match that he admits will be "complicated."
