Gianluca Vialli: Chelsea legend likens cancer to a traveling companion
Former Chelsea striker and manager Gianluca Vialli has likened cancer to an unwanted traveling companion after a 17-month battle with the disease.

Vialli
had pancreatic cancer for 17 months before recent tests showed no sign of the illness following two cycles of chemotherapy.
“I could not battle against cancer, because I think it is a far stronger opponent than I am,”
he told RAI Sport
.
“I consider cancer to be a traveling companion, albeit an unwanted one that got on the train and sat by my side, and we’ll carry on together for as long as needs be.
“Hopefully, it’ll eventually get tired and go away.”
“I realize that people can look at me, see that I am doing alright, and hope that they might do the same.”
As a player, he was at
Cremonese
and
Sampdoria
before moving to
Juventus
, where he won the Serie A title and the Champions League.
Vialli joined
Chelsea
in 1996 and was named player-manager following the sacking of
Ruud Gullit
in February 1998.
He went on to lead the Blues to victory in the League Cup, Uefa Cup Winners' Cup, and Uefa Super Cup in the same year.
