Wolfsburg boss Glasner thrilled with their 5-0 win against Schalke 04

Wolfsburg improved their playing rhythm in the second half against Schalke 04 at the Volkswagen Arena and exhibited a fine and lively attacking performance.

After Shkodran Mustafi's own goal in the first half, the Wolves netted four more goals after the restart to procure a 5-0 victory that saves them on course for

Champions League

spots.

With this result in hand for the Green-and-Whites, they have now taken ten points from their last four home fixtures in

Bundesliga

without yielding a solitary goal.

It was likewise the Wolves' third victory in their third encounter of the season against the relegation fighters Royal Blues, who are winless in 23 away games.

Wolfsburg head coach

Oliver Glasner

was delighted with his squad form, he said after the macth:

“When it finishes 5-0, everyone’s very satisfied. It was hard work. We didn’t have it all our own way in the first half because Schalke were very aggressive and made the spaces tight. We didn’t get into a rhythm and were fortunate to go in at the break with a 1-0 lead through the own goal, although defensively we always had things under control. In the second half, we were very precise and looked to get the ball forward quickly."

Glasner believes after their third goal, Schalke surrendered the match:

"After the second and third goals, Schalke’s heads dropped. Overall we’re very pleased with the performance and it confirms what we’ve always said – that we’re a very solid team, so one or two absences don’t destabilise us. That’s actually what pleases me the most.”

On the other hand, Schalke 04 manager

Dimitrios Grammozis

was disappointed yet hopeful for positive changes in the future for the Miners:

“It’s a very tough result for us. We made it very difficult for VfL to create chances during the first 30 minutes. It was precisely in that period, in which I sensed a certain stability in the team, that we conceded this own goal, which was obviously a big blow for us. You sense with the lads that they get thrown by a goal like that and it’s not easy mentally. In spite of that, we wanted to keep firm after half-time but with the second and third goals, you noticed that it was getting harder and harder and that our fate was sealed. We still have to make sure we take the positives and prepare ourselves for the next opponents.”
